Tank Jacking Equipment

Tanks were previously built using conventional methods or using heavy-lift cranes. The shell courses were erected in the order of the bottom course first, followed by the remaining courses. This method involved working at increasing heights. Also, this method had other constraints like safety and quality considerations.

However, with a greater emphasis on safety on construction sites and higher quality control, the conventional tank erection method did not effectively meet the standards. This gave rise to an entirely new concept of erecting the tanks whereby the erection work was restricted close to ground level and the part completed tank was pushed up. The bottom course was constructed last.

This method of construction is called as “Jacking-Up” method. In this method, the tank is erected with the help of Hydraulic jacks (equipped with the Tank erection equipment) connected to a Power source.

Tank Jacking Methodology

  • Firstly, the foundation of the tank is prepared
  • Once the foundation is prepared, the bottom plates are laid out and welded.
  • The circumference of the tank is marked out on the bottom.
  • Then, the topmost shell course is erected, and the plates are welded vertically
  • The roof is then made ready above the topmost shell.
  • The base plates are welded to the bottom plate about 130mm away from the Shell ring internally
  • Lifting trestles are then connected to the base plates, and hydraulic jacks with other components are equipped.
  • The maximum arc distance between two Jacking units shall not exceed 3 - 3.5 meters.
  • The number and size (capacity) of jacks are determined by the weight to be lifted and the height of the tank, wind speed, etc.
  • A lifting lug and a fend-off lug are welded temporarily to the shell plates in front of each jacking unit so that the lifting arm and sliding chair can lift the tank.
  • The jacks are interconnected through a system of hydraulic pressure hoses.
  • The hydraulic jacks are connected to a Hydraulic powerpack unit that allows for synchronized lifting.

  • After lifting the sub-assembly to a desired height, a new course of shell is erected. Then the first shell is seated and welded to the next shell.
  • The lugs are now removed from the top shell plate and are welded to the second shell plate as done previously.
  • The jacks are then lowered manually to the original lifting position for lifting the next shell.
  • This procedure is continued for erecting additional courses until the full height of the tank has been reached.
  • Once all the shell courses are erected, the tank is lowered to the last shell course. The shell and the bottom plate are welded together.
  • The jacking equipment is then dismantled and removed.
